Employment Planning

You Got the Job! Now What?

Employers can take away your job just as easily as they gave it. Make sure you continue to impress. A job is not a career. Your career will be an ever changing, developing series of jobs and responsibilities. Be mindful of the steps that will help you progress in your career.

Basic Behaviors
• Always be on time and appropriately dressed.
• Make sure you know exactly what is expected of you. Ask for examples of previous work similar to what you have been asked to do.
• If you are unsure of anything, ask. It’s better than making a mistake.
• Learn about things not directly related to your responsibilities. The more you know, the more valuable you become to the company.
• Keep training and improving.
• Personal phone calls and visits by friends and family should be infrequent.
• Go the extra mile. Do more than is expected or required.
• Never promise more than you can deliver. It is better to under promise and over achieve.
• Set goals for your next step and know what you have to do to get there, but be patient. You are not likely to be promoted three weeks after you start.
• Ask for feedback or performance reviews at least annually.
• Be positive. Avoid a complaining or gossiping attitude.

What if I hate the job?
• Try to make good of a bad situation.
Have you been there long enough to know if you don’t like it? Are there other areas of the company where you might be interested in working?
• Keep looking. Follow the path you have already taken for job searching and interviews. It is not wise to leave a company until you have arranged your next job.
• You can still use the company you are with to your advantage.
• You will have gained on-the-job experience.
• You can earn a good reference, but only if you make the best of what you have while you look for something better.
• You will have made contacts through the job that could help you in future job searchs.
