Elder L. Tom Perry Keynote Speaker at LDS Business College 121st Commencement
by D. Louise Brown
April 7, 2008

Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will address graduates of LDS Business College at the 121st Commencement on Thursday, April 10, in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square. The academic processional begins at 1:50 p.m.; the program begins at 2 p.m. Many of this year’s graduates began their education when the college was housed at the Mansion Campus on 400 East South Temple, and now complete their degrees at the new Triad Campus on North Temple 300 West. That number—and those memories—dwindle with each year’s commencement. A reception for graduates and their guests will be held at the Triad Campus following Commencement.

College President Stephen K. Woodhouse will conduct. Student speakers are Cynthia Paola Alvaradejo from Mexico City, Mexico who will receive a Financial/Managerial Accounting certificate and an associates business degree, and Cynthia Nicole Broadhead from Venture, California, who will receive an Interior Design degree.

Allen J. Muhelstein, retired president of Bear River Mutual Insurance, and director of Utah operations for Germantown Mutual, will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the highest award given by the College.

Graduates will receive 234 two-year degrees and 134 certificates. Students may earn two-year Associate of Applied Science degrees, Associate of Science transfer degrees, and/or one-year certificates. The most popular degrees are Business, General Studies, and Interior Design.

Seating at the Assembly Hall is available on a first come, first served basis; no tickets will be distributed.

Overall enrollment this year averaged 1367 students. Students come from 45 states and approximately 50 countries.

Fifty-one percent of students are under 25 years of age. Nearly all students—98 percent—are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fifteen percent are married. Gender distribution of graduates is 85 males, 163 females. The youngest graduate is 18 years old; the oldest, 61.

The college offers programs in accounting, business, information and office technology, medical careers, interior design, office management, and two-year Associate of Science degrees in General Studies or Business. The mission of the College is to prepare students for the job market with a skills-oriented education in an LDS environment. Resident tuition per semester is $1,300.

All students agree to live by an honor code that encourages modest dress, personal integrity, moral cleanliness, honest conduct, and abstention from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and illegal drugs.

The college was founded Nov. 15, 1886 by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owns the institution. Karl G. Maeser was the founding principal.

Administrative officers include: Stephen K. Woodhouse, president; J. Larry Richards, assistant to the president for faculty, student life, and planning; R. Brent Cherrington, chief information officer; Carolyn S. Brown, vice president for academic affairs, development and accreditation; Jerry M.
