Desktop Discovered: A new discovery has been made in Room 210. Matt Tittle, acting dean of students, has confirmed that the top of his desk is the same color as that of everyone else’s.

$1 Million Received: A group of nearly 30 students, staff and faculty greeted two representatives from Deseret Trust who presented a $1 million dollar donation to the College on Thursday, May 8 on the 10th floor. Glenn Ahrens and Bruce Haws (a Distinguished Alumnus of the College) represented an anonymous donor who has now contributed $2 million to the development of scholarships for the College.

The donation will be used to create endowments by matching donations from others. “If faculty or staff and their families contribute $5,000, we’ll use the interested generated by this money in a 3-to-1 match to create $20,000 endowments. A $20,000 endowment creates a half-tuition scholarship in perpetuity, in the name of whomever they want. It’s a great thing,” said Craig Nelson, vice president of student affairs and advancement. He explained the College used the interest generated from a million dollars donated four years ago by this individual to create similar endowments. “Internally, this is a fairly unique set-up. It’s great encouragement for those who are philanthropic at heart and want the match to create an endowment. We’ve had a number of people on campus who’ve taken advantage of this,” Brother Nelson said.

The donor—an Alumni of the College—set up the matching program. The interest generated annually ends up in scholarships, whether matched or not. “Even in those years when we’re not able to use all the money for matches, we can still apply it to scholarships. It’s a marvelous, inspired program,” Brother Nelson said. He added, “The donor told us the first million was a test to see how we would handle it. He told us we’ve done well, and he donated the second million.”

The two representatives from Deseret Trust were pleased with the reception they received from College students and personnel, Brother Nelson said.

Float Project: The next float de-construction project is scheduled for Thursday, May 15 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to help strip the float of its previous décor. Bring a medium-size screwdriver and pliers, if possible. The float is stored in warehouse number N-8 at 1950 South 900 West. Call Louise at 524-8174 if you need transportation.

Testing Schedule: Students from West High will once again converge on LDS Business College during May to take AP and IB exams. The ongoing relationship is designed to familiarize the high school students with the College by providing a testing facility for them. The students will be on campus from May 5th through the 23rd. They’ll use rooms 601, 701, 702, and 703. On Wednesday through Friday, May 7 through 9, they’ll also use the Multi-purpose Room. Morning testing sessions begin as early as 7:00 a.m. on some days. Afternoon sessions run from 12:00 to as late as 4:15. West High officials anticipate administering 1,167 exams this year.

Submissions Sought: The editorial assistant of the Church News section of the Deseret News is seeking submissions from LDS Business College personnel and students. Jane Hawkins, a former LDSBC student and employee, said that editor Shaun Stahle was in the College recently, and information on the flat screens prompted him to seek submissions from the College community.

Sister Hawkins said, “We are looking for submissions for the ‘Living by the Scriptures,’ a series of Church News reader response articles that are about 250-300 words, in which the author tells of an experience, or a moment, when a particular scripture helped him or her, when it offered comfort, guidance and much-needed support. The submission should include the scripture reference and tell how it affected the person. Any member may submit articles, whether an adult or youth. We will be pleased to consider each submission. When we receive a submission for that column, it is placed in a file. We review that file every week and select one to be printed. Our selection is not necessarily based on how long ago the submission was received, therefore there is no deadline for us to receive it.”

Sister Hawkins added, “We’d really like to hear from the College’s students or employees. I know there are stories there.” Therefore, be sure to indicate "LDS Business College Student" or "Staff" or "Faculty" with your submission.

Submissions may be sent to Church News, P.O. Box 1257, Salt Lake City, Utah 84110; by Fax (801) 237-2524; or by e-mail: churchnews@desnews.com

Winning Students: Two LDS BC student took top honors in the 2008 International Interior Design Association Portfolio Event, according to Miles Hunsaker, interior design department chair. Kalie Graves took second place, and Tracy Burns earned an honorable mention from among the 32 entries. LDS Business College students submitted 11 entries, USU sent 10, and Weber State submitted 11. Brother Hunsaker noted that the judges, who are commercial designer, shared that they were impressed with the portfolios sent by LDSBC students, and in some cases, entries recognized were just a few points above other entries. Brother Hunsaker also said, “One of the designers on the panel attended the Weber State Portfolio event, a few weeks ago, and said that one of his concerns about the Weber State projects was that they have used too much technology with their textiles and color boards. He said that people want to see the texture and true color of samples, not a re-imaged version. He said he appreciates the fact that we still teach hand drafting in our program.”

The site includes information about the Plaza (female housing), the Lodge (male housing), other properties, application form, and the Carriage Café meal card plan. The site can be viewed here.
