Commencement 2012

on .

If you are an LDSBC 2012 Graduate….
…then you’re a member of the College’s historic 125th graduating class. Congratulations!

Here are the basic details:

  • Commencement will be held Friday, April 13 at the Tabernacle on Temple Square
  • The event starts at 2:00 p.m. but graduates must be there at 1:00 p.m. Enter Door 24 on the north side of the Tabernacle.
  • Arrive in your cap and gown, and leave all your personal belongings with family or friends. They should plan to be seated in the Tabernacle by 1:30 p.m. Seating for them is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • The processional march begins at 1:45. Graduates will line up outside and march into the Tabernacle.
  • Elder D. Todd Christofferson is our keynote speaker this year, and Sister Patricia T. Holland, wife of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, is our Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient.

There are a lot more details you should know...

Shirts and ties for the men and dresses for the women are appropriate clothing. Wear light, cotton clothing. The hall gets warm, and the gowns intensify the heat. You may bring a disposable bottle of water that will be thrown away prior to the processional. Wear shoes that are easy to walk in. If you are not dress and grooming compliant you will not be able to participate in commencement exercises.
You will line up by programs and only your name will be read. If you are receiving degrees from more than one program, you may choose the program in which you wish to be recognized.
If you are married, you and your spouse may receive your degrees together. Line up in either your area of study or that of your spouse. Let the line attendant know you are lining up as husband and wife.
When you put on your cap, the tassel goes on the right side before your graduation. A survey of Utah colleges and high schools shows that almost half put it on the left before graduation, but the correct way is on the right side before graduation and left after. Trust us on this one.
The program will last approximately 90 minutes. Music will be by the Institute Choir. Elder Todd D. Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be our commencement speaker.
Photos by family members are allowed, but must be restricted to a designated area that will be noted.
Gammell Photography will take a photo of you receiving your diploma from President Richards. If you are interested in viewing these proofs, make sure you complete your contact information on the back of your name card given to you when you line up. You will get a name card the day of graduation. Gammell Photography is not associated with the College and you are under no obligation to purchase photographs.

To receive your diploma:

  1. The line Marshall will direct your row when it is time to stand and walk up toward the pulpit.
  2. Bring your name card with you.
  3. Your name will be read as you shake hands with President Richards, receive your diploma cover, and have your picture taken.
  4. You will cross the stage and shake hands with the other dignitaries.
  5. You will then return to your seat.
Your diploma cover will be empty. The diploma will be mailed to you after the graduation office verifies your graduation, usually within 60 days after you finish your course work.
Cheers, shouts, whooping and hollering are not appropriate in the Tabernacle. The building is a dedicated house of worship. Find other, more appropriate ways to express your emotions.
You and your family are invited to attend a reception held at the College following graduation ceremonies. So we suggest you park at the College and then ride TRAX to travel to the Tabernacle. Trains leave every 10-15 minutes. Travel from the College to Temple Square is part of the Free Fare Zone. When Commencement is over, ride back for the reception.
To verify correct spelling of name and degrees earned, check with the Registrar’s/Graduation Office.
