Commencement 2012: Looking Back

on .

This year’s LDS Business College graduates enjoyed the distinction of belonging to the College’s 125th graduating class. The milestone event was held in the Tabernacle on Temple Square on Friday, April 13. This year’s graduates received 344 two-year degrees and 146 certificates.  President J. Lawrence Richards commented that although this is only the second year the College has held Commencement in the Tabernacle, the building was filled with the crowd families, friends and well-wishers.
Elder D. Todd Christofferson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Quorum of the Twelve Apostles delivered the keynote address, and Patricia T. Holland, wife of Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the highest honor given by the college.
Sister Holland has a deep appreciation for the importance of education, fostered not only through her own experiences but also through the near-decade she supported her husband as president of Brigham Young University. Education can answer many needs, she said. “I believe with all my heart that people’s leadership skills are improved with education. Education does more than just teach skills and abilities. It gives people confidence to become leaders. The more education a person has, the greater their leadership skills are, and the deeper their religiosity becomes,” she said. Mrs. Holland attended LDS Business College in the 60s.
College President J. Lawrence Richards noted, “LDS Business College’s first Commencement was held 125 years ago. Today, as then, our graduates will enter the market as talented, skilled, ethical employees, prepared to make a valuable contribution. We are proud of them and their accomplishments. Through them the College’s rich tradition of enlightening minds, elevating hope, and ennobling souls continues.”
A large crowd of graduates and their guests attended a reception held in their honor on the campus immediately following commencement.
